The fact that characters are people is a bad thing. It implies that there is an underclass of people who live short and generally painful lives for our entertainment. It implies that writing fiction is unethical. The world is a worse place because this is true.
If applicable, now that you have learned that your characters are people, start treating them as such. Keep them alive and give them as good a life as you can. This is very difficult, but it's worth it. Thank you!
